The lovely town of Brantôme is settled on an island on the Dronne river. It is one of the most beautiful town of the Périgord with its abbey leaned on high rocky cliffs. These rocky cliffs were natural shelter that seduced the Benedictine monks when they decided to build this abbey in the 8th century. The abbey have been destroyed several times, notably during the Normand invasion at the end of the first millenium or during wars with the English, but it has been rebuilt several times. The abbey we see today in Brantôme is from the 15th century, when it gets this gothic style, and from the 16th century when a palace and a Renaissance garden were added to the old building. Nowadays, the abbey has become a cultural center you can visit.
The abbey is not the only visit in Brantôme. The old town offers plenty of things to see from Middle Ages and Renaissance times such as the « Porte des Réformés » or the Notre-Dame church. Nearby the abbey, you can admire a fountain in the former gardens of the monks or walk to the tower St Roch, an old tower that has been replaced by an elegant Pavillon in Renaissance style.
If you want to have nice views on the abbey, the best place is on the bridge over the Dronne river. The perfect spot for photos.
